This course will cover functions, polynomial functions, complex numbers, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, trigonometric functions, mathematical inductions, sequences, and binomial theorem.
Prerequisite: MAT 105 College Algebra 1
This course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity for in-depth application and reinforcement of principles and techniques that have been taught throughout the program. This clinical rotation will allow students to apply learned skills such as: EKG, Phlebotomy, office and clinical procedures, specimen collection and all previously learned skill in the medical field. Topics include: Application of classroom knowledge and skills, functioning in the work environment, listening, and following directions. Prior to internship the student will receive 10 hours of employability skills, resume building, personal growth skills and communication skills to better prepare them for the workforce.
This course is designed to teach students the coding rules for the CPT, ICD-10-CM and Level II (HCPCS) coding systems and then apply the rules to code patient services. In addition, a variety of payment systems are presented. The medical topics of Medicare fraud/abuse, HMOs, and PROs are also reviewed. The course also covers the use of International Classification of Disease, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes in medical billing and insurance claims. Reimbursement policies and procedures for medical billing, coding of the medical office and electronic medical health record.
This course is an introduction to health care and the health care environment. The course introduces students to health care delivery systems, effective use of interpersonal skills, legal accountability, promoting wellness, infection control, standard (universal) precautions, computer literacy, employability skills, and basic math and science skills. This course includes the first 11 performance standards of the Florida Department of Education curriculum framework for health careers.
This course is divided into 72 hours of classroom/theoretical study and 18 hours of laboratory assignments and instruction.
Students will learn the laws and ethical standards that govern the health care workers, enhance verbal and written communication skills and discuss patient’s rights. Students will also cover main protocols for patient care including education in HIPAA and medical errors, domestic violence in the health care field and the health care profession chain of command and the importance of documentation. Additionally, students will learn professional ethics and to explain the laws governing harassment, labor and recognizing and reporting abuse, learn terms such as; malpractice, negligence and assaults and battery. Prepare the students on techniques for effective job interview process, how to make a professional resume and employability skills.
This course focuses specifically on HIV/AIDS. This class meets the State of Florida basic AIDS course for licensed health-care personnel.
Students in this class will learn and become qualified to perform Child and Adult CPR.
This course must be taken prior to entering the nursing program. This course is designed as a transitional course for the licensed LPN or Paramedic student who is becoming a professional nurse. This course encompasses the area of role definition; providing/managing care of individuals and groups utilizing goal attainment to reach an optimum state of health and wellness, HIV/AIDS training will occur during this course.
This course provides the foundation upon which all subsequent to nursing courses are taught. Covered are the concepts and principles related to, and the components of, the roles of the professional nurse (provider of care, manager of care and member of the nursing profession), competent evidence- based nursing practice, therapeutic communication, nursing values, health promotion and maintenance, and the nursing process, within the various healthcare delivery systems of acute, long-term and community environments. Strategies for success in the nursing program are presented.
This course is designed to prepare students for the different aspects of the medical office environment. Students will learn the infrastructure and workflow of the medical office, from appointment setting to administrative skills that include basic coding, insurance verification and insurance authorization process. Students will understand customer service concepts and develop the cognitive and affective mindset needed for executing policies and procedures of the medical office. Students begin to apply office technology in the classroom. Upon completion of this course, students will learn to use computer applications to generate letters, mailings, file management, spreadsheets, reports, bookkeeping, presentations, e-mail and use the Internet.
This course is designed to enable the beginner medical professional to understand the foundation and principles of entry level basic pharmacology. The student will be provided with a practical yet comprehensive approach to the skill of classifying, performing mathematic equations and comprehension of math applications of pharmacology medication conversions. The student will learn to calculate the correct dose of the drug using standard formulas. In addition, student will demonstrate knowledge of Federal and State Healthcare Legislation and regulations of pharmacology principles. They will learn to prepare and administer oral and parenteral medications under the role of the medical assistant, drug and medication classifications and therapeutic effects and medical abbreviation and prescription interpretation.
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and practice of procedures required for blood draws. These include sanitation techniques and sterilization procedures, venipuncture, identification of labeling, identifying orders and other essential information for the development of the phlebotomy skills base.
This course is designed to provide theory on the cardiovascular system, its structure and function and electrical conduction. Students will learn the composition of the heart, its blood flow, layers of the heart, cardiac muscle, heart valves, cardiac cycles, heart rate and the pathology of diseases. Students will demonstrate skills in related terminology. The student will demonstrate how to perform EKG’s through 12 lead electrocardiograph machines and learn to understand and interpret basic, provided with a practical yet comprehensive approach to the skill of 12-Lead EKG interpretation automatic and manual reports.
The role and function of the clinical medical assistant is reviewed. Topics include understanding infection control, knowledge of instrumentation used during exams, demonstration of skills in taking vital signs, preparing patients for office surgery and diagnostic testing. The student will learn fundamental concepts for different departments of internal medicine to assist in the following departments: GYN, Cardiology, Mental Health, Pediatrics, Pulmonary, Orthopedics, Podiatry, Minor Surgical Procedures, Urology, and Dermatology. Also, recognize and respond to life threatening emergencies in the ambulatory care setting. The student will learn to describe signs and symptoms and their relation to human diseases.
This course serves as an introductory course for all health occupations and the health care delivery system. The health career core course will cover basic entry-level information, preparing individuals for further training in health-related occupations. Students will be introduced to basic concepts such as the health delivery system, wellness and disease, environmental safety, communication, nutrition, ethics and legal responsibilities, infection control and employability skills. This course includes fundamental anatomy and physiology of the human body. The student is introduced to selected body systems as well as common diseases related to each. Included are nervous, senses, skin, skeletal, muscular, and immune system.
This course is designed to prepare a non-professional worker with minimal skills and knowledge to perform carefully selected patient care activities, in a nursing home or hospital under direction of the Registered Professional Nurse. Upon successful completion, the graduate can apply for certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Course content includes classroom activities, simulated laboratory experiences and hands-on experience in a designated clinical agency. Classroom and clinical experiences focus on topics related to the provision of personal patient care and patient care procedures in health care agencies.
This course is divided into 35 hours of classroom/theoretical study and 40 hours of clinical experience.
This course gives the student knowledge necessary for caring for the client in the home setting. The student in this course has already completed the Articulated Nursing Assistant Course. Family differences and ethical safe practices will be stressed. Common incapacitating conditions will be discussed in addition to procedures for assisting the client and his family to cope with limitations and stress. Instruction is limited to those supportive services required to assist the client toward independent living in a safe environment. The role of the Home Health Aide as an assistant to and under direction of, the Registered Nurse is emphasized.
This course consists of 50 hours of classroom/theoretical study with complementing laboratory experiences.
This course includes knowledge and skills relating to various client care activities and associated with non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of clients in non-complex situations. Clinical activities prepare the student to apply previously learned personal care practices and procedures to the care of the patient in the hospital, home or other patient care setting. The patient care assistant course is designed to provide students with job related skills and knowledge of the structure and function, interrelatedness and needs of the human body systems. Additionally, family differences, ethical and safe practices will be stressed. The role of patient care assistants as assistants to and under the direction of a registered nurse is emphasized.
This course consists of 75 hours of clinical experience under the supervision of a registered nurse.
This course will allow the student to delve further into three Allied Health Areas and perform skills represented in the three selected allied health areas. Students enrolled in this course will have completed the patient care assistant competencies and are adding these skills to be cross- trained to perform electrocardiograph patient care techniques, phlebotomy skills and geriatric skills. Clinical and classroom activities prepare the student with additional knowledge and skills needed for employment as an aide in electrocardiograph, phlebotomy and geriatric skills.
This course introduces the student to anatomy and physiology as well as common diseases related to each body system. Included is body structure and functions specific to the areas of electrocardiograph, phlebotomy and geriatric skills.
This course consists of 150 hours of classroom/theoretical study 3with complementing laboratory experiences
This course provides skills and clinical experiences specific to the allied health areas. Students enrolled in this course have completed the patient care assistant competencies and are adding these skills to be further cross-trained with skills representative of one to three of various allied health areas (i.e. electrocardiograph, phlebotomy and geriatric skills). Students enrolled in this course will continue with clinical and classroom and laboratory activities designed to prepare the student with knowledge and the skills necessary to obtain employment as a multi-skilled health care worker.
This course consists of 100 hours of clinical experience under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Students will be prepared as cross-trained, unlicensed health care workers. Students completing this course will have received additional training in electrocardiograph, phlebotomy and geriatrics. They will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of skills and concepts related to these specialized areas of instruction as well as demonstrate knowledge of organizational and team member skills. Students enrolled in this course must have completed all modules in the patient care technician program.
This course consists of 60 hours of clinical experience under the supervision of a registered nurse.
